Many of the words used about visas are hard to understand. Even the words immigration, emigration and migration are used by different English Speaking countries in different ways. In general, when we say migration, we mean moving permanently from one country to another as in moving from or migrating from Nigeria to Australia. Immigration means moving permanently into another country.

There are many visas that are not migration visas. All visas are given out by DIAC. It may be a temporary visa that permits a short stay or even a long stay; but you may have no right to reside permanently in Australia. Some of these temporary visas can lead to permanent visas under SOME circumstances. But watch out, the rules for conversion are complex.
