Please note: there are two routes: fast and slow. Choose the one that will get the parent here the fastest--if they are elderly. The parent must pass the medical at time of application and time of grant.
This visa is for pension age parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents who desire to be reunited with their children in Australia. There are two subclasses for visas in the parent category.
You will need to:
- Meet the balance of family test; and
- An assurance of Support will be required.
For information on the Assurance of Support, click here.
In the case of the Working Age Parent Visa it is only working age parents that may apply. The applicant for a parent visa needs to be sponsored. The applicant parent is usually sponsored by the child. The child needs to be either an Australian citizen, an Australian Permanent Resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen. For information on sponsorship, click here.
Generally parents already residing in Australia can only make an application for the subclass 804 visa (Aged Parent Visa). For this to be done the parent needs to be aged.
In the case of the parent category parents residing overseas may only apply for a subclass 103 visa (parent visa). For this visa to be granted the parent needs to be residing overseas. In the case of parents that are residing in Australia, but whom are not of the age requirement for an aged parent visa, can apply to the Perth Offshore Parents Centre (POPC) for a subclass 103 visa (parent visa) provided that the parent is not exclusively barred from lodging their application while still residing in Australia. In the case of parents whom are in this situation they are also limited from lodging the application by mail or courier to the POPC while they are still residing in Australia. Persons lodging an application at the POPC should note that they are not eligible for the grant of an associated Bridging Visa to remain in Australia while their application is being processed.
