Aged Dependant Relative to Australia

The timing of this visa is crucially important. Please note that three years means three years (36 months, fully completed). Exceptions to this rule are rare. Also, the sponsor must be a citizen of Australia or have been a permanent resident for two full years, for example 1 November 2004 to 1 Nov 2006.

An Aged Dependent visa gives elderly relatives the chance to be reunited with family in Australia. If you are an elderly person, you need to have been financially dependent on your Australian sponsoring relative for the last three years. Your sponsoring relative needs to be an Australian citizen or to have been a permanent resident in Australia for the last two years.

To apply for an Aged Dependent Relative visa, you must be a person who:

  • Is old enough to be granted an Australian age pension;
  • Must be single, having never married, or is formally separated from your partner, divorced or widowed; and
  • Have been dependent on your Australian relative and remain so for a reasonable amount of time (usually three years).

For men, the age of qualification for an Australian age pension is 65 years. For women the age of qualification is now steadily being increased from 60 years of age to 65. At present the qualifying age is 62. It needs to be demonstrated that you are not married or in a de facto relationship. The relative in Australia needs to be a close relative such as a child, adopted child, sibling, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, grandchild or a step relative of the same standing. You need to be sponsored. Click here here for information about sponsorship.

You need to demonstrate that you are substantially or fully dependent on the Australian relative for basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing. You will also need to show that you have been dependent on the Australian relative for a substantial period of time (usually three years).

ASSISTANCE WITH THIS VISA OR OTHER VISAS?

This is a long term application and can take substantial time for it to be granted. The help of an agent is very strongly advised. Here is our general link to the Migration Agents Registration Authority so that you can better understand what migration agents do with regard to visas, their duties and your rights in regard to Agents’ work in Australian Visas and Citizenship.
