This is the preferred route to getting a parent into the country. It is expensive but it shortens the queue by up to 9 years!
This visa was introduced on 1 July 2003. It is a permanent migration allowing parents living outside Australia to travel to Australia to stay with their children. It has no restriction on age or country of citizenship. In addition, parents can work in Australia and take advantage of Medicare.
Although this is a “capped” visa with limited places, the new plan allows an extra 3,500 parents to apply. The contributory parent category was introduced to allow the expansion of the Parent Migration program on the basis that applicants pay a higher visa application charge and a larger Assurance of Support (AoS) bond (with a longer AoS period.)
There are four visa subclasses in the contributory parent category. For parents residing outside Australia:
- Subclass 143 Contributory Parent (Migrant) visa; and
- Subclass 173 Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa.
For parents residing in Australia:
- Subclass 864 Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) visa; and
- Subclass 884 Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa.
