Graduate Skilled Temporary Visa to Australia

This Australian visa is a short stay visa for graduates from Australian educational institutions. It allows the visa holder and their dependents (if included on the application) to remain in Australia for up to 6 months from the date they completed their education. This visa enables for complete working rights for the graduating student and dependent family members. This visa may only be obtained once.

The reason for this visa is so that overseas students who are intending to apply for an Onshore General Skilled visa who require more time to prepare their application for Australian permanent residence can maintain lawful status in Australia. One reason for an applicant wanting to obtain this visa may be that their student visa concludes before the applicant can obtain a skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for their nominated skilled occupation.

To apply for this visa, the applicant must intend to become an Australian permanent resident, and must simultaneously be putting together their relevant documents for the residence application under one of the following visa categories:

• Skilled–Independent Overseas Student visa; or
• Skilled-Australian Sponsored Overseas Student visa; or
• Skilled–Designated Area Sponsored Overseas Student visa.

If no application for permanent residence is lodged, the visa holder and the family members on the same visa must also leave Australia before or with the visa holder.

Students and their dependents included in the application must maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance while in Australia.
