Student Visa to Australia

Student visas are easier or harder to obtain depending upon the country you are coming from and your ability to afford the costs of being a student. The department has strict guidelines.

Australia's overseas student program is very generous. The Government runs an overseas student program (OSP) permitting people that are not Australian citizens or permanent residents to study in Australia. Candidates can apply to study under the OSP. Candidates must obtain a student visa before they can begin study in Australia. Information about the program is available from the official Australian Government Study in Australia website.

The provision of education and training services to overseas students in Australia is regulated by the Department of Education, Science and Training. This is accomplished through the Education Services for Overseas Students Act and legislation. The purpose of the legislation is to protect the interests of students coming to Australia by providing tuition and financial assurance and by ensuring a nationally consistent approach to the registration of educational institutions. The law also seeks to ensure the honesty of the industry by visa-related reporting rules. Candidates may be granted a student visa only if they wish to undertake a registered course or part of a registered course full-time. A registered course is a course offered by a registered Australian overseas student education provider. The provider must be registered as such with the Australian Government. The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) provides information on registered courses.
