Overseas doctors may enter Australia on a temporary or permanent visa to fill positions in the medical industry that cannot be filled by qualified Australian doctors.
When an Australian State or Territory health department determines that there are not medical practitioners available to give health care services in a specified location or a specialisation, the Australian State or Territory can declare a position in that area or specialisation as an “area of need” position. The Australian State or Territory health department can also support positions that are to be filled by overseas medical practitioners. This is done by an Australian visa.
In all visa applications, overseas medical practitioners must:
* be sponsored by their prospective employer in Australia;
* be eligible to meet Australian State or Territory medical board registration requirements;
* meet health requirements;
* meet character requirements.
Medical practitioners wishing to work in Australia can apply for an Australian Temporary Medical Practitioner Visa for up to 4 years.
